Ghana’s pharmaceutical industry currently meets only 30% of the country’s medicine needs, with the remaining 70% reliant on imports. This dependency exposes the nation’s supply chain to global disruptions, as demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic. To address this, the government encourages partnerships between local and international pharmaceutical manufacturers to enhance medicine security, create skilled jobs, and facilitate technology transfer—key pillars of Ghana’s Ten-Point Industrial Transformation Plan.

Here, we outline how IQVIA assisted Quintex Pharma to capitalize on this opportunity within the local manufacturing sector.

Quintex Pharma’s bold step toward local biopharmaceutical manufacturing in Ghana

Quintex Pharma Ltd, a local pharmaceutical company in Ghana is exploring the establishment of a biopharmaceutical injectable manufacturing facility through a in collaboration with an international partner. To support this ambitious initiative, Quintex Pharma engaged IQVIA, along with two other companies, to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study that would serve as the foundation for the project’s proposal and implementation. IQVIA’s primary role was to carry out:

  • A comprehensive analysis of Ghana’s pharmaceutical landscape
  • An evaluation of the commercial potential of selected injectable molecules
  • The development of a stakeholder engagement and communication plan

How IQVIA Helped: A Three-Phase Approach

In the first phase, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of Ghana’s pharmaceutical landscape. This involved reviewing local, regional, and international regulatory requirements for biopharmaceutical manufacturing and market approval. We examined policies aimed at improving patient access to pharmaceutical products, as well as the mechanisms and policies governing product pricing. We also assessed local pharmaceutical production, highlighting key players, major products, industry trends, unmet needs, and potential opportunities. Our analysis included an overview of the biopharmaceutical injectables market, identifying key players and high-demand molecules. We further delivered a SWOT analysis outlining the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats associated with Quintex Pharma’s proposed venture.

In the second phase, we evaluated the commercial potential by selecting injectable molecules of interest with high demand, developing a 10-year forecast for Ghana’s biopharmaceutical injectables market and extended projections to three major ECOWAS countries to assess export potential.

Finally, we developed a comprehensive stakeholder engagement and communication plan tailored to ensure buy-in from key stakeholders, including regulatory authorities, potential partners, healthcare providers, and policymakers. This plan also outlined strategies for effective marketing and public relations activities to position Quintex Pharma as a leader in biopharmaceutical manufacturing within the region.

Driving Local Pharma Growth Through Strategic Insights

Through a structured and data-driven approach, IQVIA played a pivotal role in shaping the feasibility study for Quintex Pharma’s proposed biopharmaceutical injectable manufacturing facility.
