Faster Adverse Event Detection, Less Manual Effort

A global life sciences organization approached IQVIA with a growing challenge: their pharmacovigilance team was overwhelmed by the volume of audio files. These recordings, ranging from a few seconds to several hours, contained mostly non-medical dialogue with only brief mentions of potential adverse events (PAEs) and were being manually reviewed. The manual process was time-consuming, costly, and unsustainable at scale.

Challenge

Manual review was slowing safety operations and driving up costs.

The pharmacovigilance reviewers were tasked with reviewing thousands of audio files to identify potential adverse events. These recordings were largely non-medical in nature and this manual process was not only time-intensive but also costly and difficult to scale, creating bottlenecks in safety reporting and compliance workflows.

Solution

IQVIA implemented a scalable solution with IQVIA Vigilance Detect to automate audio transcription and identify medically relevant content.

By flagging PAEs, the system enabled the pharmacovigilance team to focus only on high-priority segments. Supporting both bot-to-human and human-to-human workflows, the solution improved efficiency, accuracy, and compliance.

Result: 95% time savings

Versus manual review in bot-to-human interactions, with 2.14% reported AEs, and a 38.5% time savings in human-to-human review, with 19.83% reported AEs.

More than 130,000 files processed in one year with 99% transcription accuracy across all interactions.

By surfacing only the most relevant content, Vigilance Detect significantly reduced manual effort while maintaining high accuracy and compliance in pharmacovigilance operations.
