Market potential and healthcare saving from a new pharmacist class

Overview

The Swedish Government requested the Swedish Medical Product Agency to investigate the potential implementation of a new "Pharmacist Only" class. A top 10 consumer health company in Sweden aimed to explore the impact of introducing this new pharmacist class. IQVIA was tasked with evaluating the proposal and examining the potential for Rx-to-OTC switches in various categories.
Challenge

The challenge involved characterizing and conducting a gap analysis for the proposed Pharmacist Class, gathering insights from primary care physicians on the new switches and Pharmacist Class, and assessing the regulatory feasibility to switch molecules from Rx to OTC and potential implications of ‘reverse’ switches.
Solution

The solution included conducting market research with primary care physicians to determine time savings from transitioning specific products to the new pharmacist class. It also included a detailed analysis using reference countries with an established pharmacist class across multiple categories to estimate market potential using existing IQVIA data, and providing insights on the suitability and perceptions of the new Pharmacist Class, along with savings projections.
Results

The results included the identification of opportunities for new molecules/categories and enhancements for existing molecules, market potential and healthcare savings estimations, regulatory feasibility assessment, Rx-to-OTC switch potential analysis, and insights on suitability and attitudes towards the new Pharmacist Class.
