In 2012, Dispensary of Hope was in its infancy but had big dreams of serving America’s 28 million uninsured and underinsured. The organization’s mission is to deliver generic medications free of charge through clinics, pharmacies, and nonprofit hospital dispensaries across the country.

CEO Christopher Palombo recalls the joy of seeing hundreds of medicines ready for shipment for the first time. “I remember the day I walked in our warehouse, and we had pallets stacked double high full of beautiful medicine,” he said.

Over the years, the program has expanded immensely with IQVIA as a partner. Today, Dispensary of Hope (DOH) collects and distributes millions of dollars of pharmaceuticals annually to pharmacies and safety-net clinics across the country to dispense to low income, chronically ill patients.

It’s no easy feat to break down barriers to secure board of pharmacy licensing from dozens of governmental organizations. Bill Buzzeo, IQVIA VP and general manager of the U.S. Compliance Center of Excellence, and his team of experts were assigned to get it done.

Buzzeo expressed pride and satisfaction with the results. “Ensuring compliance for our clients has always been at our core,” he said. “But when you step back and realize that the compliance services we supply to DoH result ultimately in improved patient care, that underscores the importance of the work our team does and aligns to one of IQVIA's top goals of improving patient care.”

Dispensary of Hope’s Palombo says the decision to work with IQVIA client was “not only inexpensive compared to the alternative of doing it ourselves, but the quality was very high.” Today they have reached 56 manufacturers and 220 location partners.

This alliance between DoH and IQVIA was inspired by IQVIA’s previous contract to provide DoH with SMART National Sales Perspectives data. The data included where medications were made, market share, and licensing requirements. The information was collected from a panel of wholesalers and manufacturers representing 90% of the pharmaceutical market. IQVIA was also able to point DoH to sources for the generic medicines it needed.

DoH supports IQVIA’s vision of being Healthcare’s Vital Partner through service, dedication, and generosity. “Someday I hope that there will be no uninsured in the United States,” Palombo said. “The 28 million is who we’re here for, that’s our calling.”
