Jun 12, 2023

In a context where non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are on the rise, access to quality healthcare remains insufficient and largely inadequate for the 6.5 billion people in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

This report from the IQVIA Institute for Human Data Science and Hystra looks at a new generation of inclusive healthcare initiatives that have emerged to address the rising chronic disease burden and improve the diagnosis, treatment, and care for underserved populations sustainable models. It is a follow-up to the report titled, Scaling-Up Inclusive Healthcare Initiatives in Low- and Middle-Income Countries, published in 2022, in which Hystra and the IQVIA Institute identified a global landscape of 244 inclusive business initiatives.

Innovators are creating new technologies and business practices to address well-known health systems challenges, including supply chain inefficiencies, low traceability of medicine, unaffordability of care, insufficient training of medical staff, inaccessibility at the last mile, lack of preventative behaviors, and other challenges.

Based on a deep dive into the learnings shared by pioneering companies, this report presents business model innovations and recommendations for entrepreneurs, corporations, investors, health funders, and governments – on how to unlock the growth potential of innovative inclusive businesses categorized into four business models: inclusive clinics and hospitals, pharmacy-based models, community-based models, and health coverage and disease prevention model.
