AI Advertising is Coming to Healthcare
What We Know, Why It Matters, and How You Can Prepare

Update, July 16, 2026: New guidance shared by our partners at StackAdapt indicates that select healthcare categories, including hospitals and urgent care, health insurance, disease awareness, dental, vision, and consumer medical devices, may now be reviewed for potential OpenAI campaign eligibility. The change is not yet reflected in OpenAI's published advertising policies, and several healthcare categories remain prohibited, so eligibility will require case-by-case review. Reach out to our team with questions or to discuss what this development could mean for your organization.

AI Ads: From Experimental to Experiential

AI-powered search experiences have quickly evolved from experimental products into monetized marketing channels. In recent months, both Google and OpenAI have expanded advertising capabilities within their AI-driven experiences, creating new opportunities for brands to engage consumers as they research, compare options, and make decisions.

For healthcare marketers, these developments represent more than just another ad placement. They signal a broader shift in how people discover information and how organizations may need to think about visibility in an increasingly AI-driven search landscape.

While adoption patterns, measurement standards, and long-term performance expectations are still developing, now is the time for healthcare organizations to prepare or risk losing brand visibility to competitors.

The Path to Healthcare AI Ads

Over the past several years, generative AI has been introduced to search experiences at an accelerating pace. Within the last year, this evolution has increasingly included ad inventory.

2022

  • November: Conversational AI enters the mainstream. OpenAI launches ChatGPT, helping normalize conversational AI as a consumer behavior and setting the stage for AI assistants to become discovery and decision-making environments.

2023

  • May:
    • Google introduces generative AI in search, with ads still in view. Google announces its Search Generative Experience, an early version of AI-powered search results. Even in this experimental phase, Google makes clear that Search ads will continue to appear in dedicated ad slots.
    • AI Overviews move from experiment to broad U.S. rollout. Google begins rolling out AI Overviews to everyone in the U.S. and says it expects the feature to reach more than one billion people by the end of the year. Google also reiterates that ads will remain clearly labeled in dedicated slots.

2024

  • October: Ads in AI Overviews go live on mobile in the U.S. After testing, Google makes ads in AI Overviews available for mobile users in the U.S. Ads can appear within the AI-generated experience when relevant to the query and response.

2025

  • May: Google brings ads to AI mode and expands AI Overview ads. At Google Marketing Live 2025, Google announces that ads in AI Overviews are expanding to desktop and that ads are coming to AI Mode, a more conversational search experience, for select industries but not healthcare.

2026

  • February: OpenAI begins testing ads in ChatGPT. OpenAI begins testing ads in ChatGPT for logged-in adults on Free and Go tiers in the U.S. OpenAI says ads are clearly labeled, separate from answers, and not eligible near sensitive or regulated topics such as health, mental health, or politics.
  • May:
    • OpenAI launches beta self-serve Ads Manager and CPC bidding. OpenAI expands advertiser access by introducing a beta self-serve Ads Manager, partner-based buying options, CPC bidding, and expanded measurement tools.
    • Google Search becomes more AI-native. At Google I/O 2026, Google says AI Mode has surpassed one billion monthly active users globally and announces a redesigned AI-powered Search box, follow-up questions from AI Overviews into AI Mode, and broader agentic search capabilities.
    • Google introduces more AI-native ad formats. Google announces new Gemini-powered ad formats, including Conversational Discovery ads, Highlighted Answers, AI-powered Shopping ads, and Business Agent for Leads.
  • June: Healthcare begins entering the AI ad conversation. Reporting, prompted by our own Ben Goldman, indicates Google has begun a small U.S. test of healthcare ads in AI Mode and AI Overviews.

As you see in the timeline, several announcements in May accelerated the conversation around AI advertising. Most notable for healthcare marketers, Google has begun testing healthcare advertising within AI Mode.

Historically, healthcare advertisers have often waited longer than other industries to gain access to emerging advertising capabilities because of privacy, compliance, and policy considerations. The inclusion of healthcare signals that these environments may become increasingly relevant for provider organizations, health systems, and other healthcare brands.

Why AI Ads Matter for Your Marketing Strategy

Historically, search advertising has been built around capturing existing intent. A consumer searches for a specific service, provider, or condition, and advertisers compete to appear in those moments. AI-driven experiences introduce a different dynamic.

Instead of simply responding to a known query, AI platforms increasingly help users explore options, compare solutions, and evaluate recommendations. This creates opportunities for brands to influence decision-making earlier in the journey, before a consumer has fully defined what they are looking for.

For healthcare organizations, this could mean new opportunities to engage prospective patients as they:

  • Research symptoms or conditions
  • Explore treatment options
  • Compare providers
  • Evaluate care settings
  • Plan next steps in their healthcare journey

While traditional search remains important, AI-powered experiences may increasingly shape how patients discover and evaluate healthcare organizations.

What We Know, and What We Don't Know Yet

As interest in AI advertising grows, it is important to separate confirmed developments from industry speculation.

We know:

  • Google is actively expanding advertising opportunities within AI-powered search experiences.
  • Healthcare advertisers are beginning to gain access to these placements.
  • OpenAI is investing in advertising infrastructure and measurement capabilities.
  • Consumer adoption of AI-powered discovery experiences continues to grow.

What we don't yet know:

  • How quickly consumers will shift meaningful portions of their search behavior into AI-powered experiences.
  • How advertising performance in AI environments will compare to traditional search.
  • What long-term measurement and attribution standards will look like.
  • How users will respond to advertising embedded within AI-generated experiences.

These unanswered questions are exactly why healthcare marketers should focus on preparedness rather than prediction.

How Healthcare Organizations Can Prepare

You do not need to overhaul your media strategy today, but you should begin evaluating the readiness of your media strategy. A practical starting point includes:

  • Understanding whether current campaigns meet Google's eligibility requirements for AI-powered placements.
  • Reviewing the use of AI-driven campaign types and automation features within Google Ads.
  • Assessing measurement frameworks and reporting capabilities.
  • Monitoring how AI-driven experiences may be influencing patient discovery and research behavior for your organization.
  • Establishing governance and brand guidelines for participation in emerging AI advertising environments.

The organizations that build familiarity with these capabilities now will be in a stronger position to test, learn, and adapt as adoption accelerates.

The Bottom Line: Assess Your AI Advertising Readiness

While many questions remain, healthcare marketers should view these developments as an early signal of where digital discovery is headed. The goal is not to react to every new announcement, but to ensure your organization is prepared as AI-driven experiences become a larger part of how patients find information and make decisions.
