WHITE PAPER
Telemedicine Demystified–Necessity During the Pandemic, Boon for the Future
Nov 09, 2021

Telemedicine, often referred as telehealth or e-medicine, is the remote delivery of healthcare services, such as examinations and consultations, using telecommunications infrastructure. Telehealth use surged during the COVID-19 pandemic due to stay-at-home orders and fear of contracting the virus. It later evened out as the lockdowns eased. In the face of the unprecedented health crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) – Government of India, along with the NITI Aayog, released the Telemedicine Practice Guidelines that allowed registered medical practitioners (RMPs) to deliver healthcare services leveraging digital health technologies via telemedicine platforms. Every area of the telehealth industry has been affected by this change: from clinician adoption of telehealth tools, to patient attitudes, usage and satisfaction, to investment in telehealth.

With the telemedicine guidelines in place, doctors can write prescriptions based on telephonic, textual or video conversations — chat, images, messaging, emails, fax and others. This allows users to consult certified medical practitioners without going out of the house and reduce the risk of transmission even further.

The CII-IQVIA telemedicine whitepaper goes into the granularities of telemedicine and the opportunities that exists, while also highlighting the challenges that must be addressed to improve the access to quality healthcare.
