The first step is to consult with you on your device needs. Data needs vary widely and can range from very simple, small-scale studies to full clinical performance studies that are more complex and fully powered clinical studies. We evaluate the requirements to find a fit-for-purpose solution.
Clinical performance studies are generally conducted to evaluate sensitivity and specificity compared to a gold standard reference. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways. The design, statistical approach and success thresholds will be discussed with you in advance of initiating your study, considering the specific device, purpose and regulatory requirements.
Human Factors studies are small-scale qualitative studies to evaluate the human-device interface and determine if the Instructions for Use are sufficient to enable correct use of the device by the end user. These studies are generally conducted in two phases:
Formative Studies:
Exploratory studies intended to optimize the labeling and/or device prior to the validation study. These studies can be conducted in 15 or more users per user group and usually involve a 1-day data collection.
Validation Studies:
Validation, or summative, studies represent the data that go to a regulatory authority for consideration of the device clearance. These studies are also small-scale, often with multiple user groups, and involve a 1-day data collection.
Usability Testing
Similar to human factors formative and validation studies, but may involve the use of a product over time or by the consumer/patient at home.
