SEARCH JOBSAls de maatschappij verandert, evolueert ook de zorg. Het is dan ook cruciaal dat de zorgsector die grote maatschappelijke trends opvolgt en een inschatting maakt van hun impact. Een voorbeeld daarvan is de nieuwe consument en of/hoe deze aan de basis zal liggen van een zorg die de nieuwe patiënt centraal stelt. Zo ging IQVIA Asia Pacific recent dieper in op dit onderwerp met de white paper “Patient-centric decision making in the digital age.” Ook in België leeft het thema. Zal de nieuwe, assertieve patiënt de toekomst van de Belgische gezondheidszorg bepalen?
“De afgelopen jaren hebben we de onmiskenbare opkomst van een nieuw type consument en patiënt gezien”, aldus Eveline Dullaers, Key Account Manager bij IQVIA Healthcare. “Het begon een vijftal jaren geleden met een nieuwe focus op de ‘user experience’. Niet toevallig ging dat samen met de opkomst van vernieuwende bedrijven zoals Uber, AirBnB, … De on demand-economie en “Uberization” hebben een nieuw soort consument doen ontstaan.” Deze nieuwe consument verwacht dienstverlening op vraag, durft eisen te stellen en communiceert publiek en assertief. Hij of zij is ook sterk met gezondheid bezig. Getuige daarvan zijn het succes van de activity trackers en van de kookboeken gericht op gezonde voeding.
“Dat deze consument veeleisend is, is duidelijk. Maar in die veeleisendheid zit ook een paradox verscholen”, zegt Eveline Dullaers. “Aan de ene kant verwacht hij ‘instant gratification’ en snelle service. Langs de andere kant eist hij ook kwaliteit en individuele support.”
Maar die nieuwe consument is ook een nieuwe, assertieve patiënt. Natuurlijk blijft de nood aan zorg een confrontatie met de eigen kwetsbaarheid, net zoals in het verleden. Als patiënt naar een ziekenhuis gaan, is en blijft overweldigend.
Eveline Dullaers: “De nieuwe patiënt verwacht niet alleen individuele aandacht, maar ook zorg en betrokkenheid, tweerichtingsverkeer en dialoog. Centraal staan dus kwalitatieve interacties waarin hij of zij wordt erkend als persoon. Zorg wordt op die manier een gedeelde verantwoordelijkheid, op maat van de patiënt.”
“Het herbekijken van de zorg en de zorgpaden die we bieden vanuit het standpunt en de verwachtingen van die nieuwe patiënt wordt een belangrijke oefening. En daarbij mogen we niet vergeten te erkennen dat de passieve patiënt niet meer bestaat. Want hij of zij is mondig en gaat shoppen als de zorg niet goed wordt bevonden”, aldus Eveline Dullaers. “Wetenschappelijk onderzoek heeft bovendien ook aangetoond dat het welzijn van patiënten hoger is wanneer de betrokkenheid groot is en het vertrouwen tussen patiënt en zorgverlener kan groeien.”
Eveline Dullaers: “Zo’n drastische omwenteling wordt het wellicht niet. Het is nu vooral belangrijk dat de Belgische ziekenhuizen samen bepalen op welke manier deze maatschappelijke evolutie hun processen en organisatie beïnvloedt, nu en in de toekomst. Zo is de groeiende vraag naar nieuwe zorgvormen zoals telemedicine en thuiszorg. Deze praktische voorbeelden geven ook aan dat het niet gaat om een dogmatische discussie over buzzwoorden zoals “patient-centric care”. Het is vooral belangrijk dat de Belgische zorg een strategische visie op de steeds actievere en centrale rol van de patiënt ontwikkelt.”
