Following Thailand's Universal Coverage Scheme in 2001, some Southeast Asian countries have started implementing their own Universal Healthcare Coverage schemes in order to ensure access to quality medicines.

Yet this effort can be actively undermined if medicines do not work as they are intended to, in cases where they are either substandard or falsified. Furthermore, other challenges exist in bringing quality medicines to Southeast Asian populations, such as increasing burden on healthcare systems, financing to name a few.

This whitepaper examines challenges that are faced by Southeast Asian countries that have implemented the universal healthcare coverage and how some of these could be addressed.
